come Share the gifts of life

At Second Church, worship is a gift we share with one another and everyone who comes through our door. Worship is where we gather as individuals in community to meditate on God's Word and its meaning in our lives. It is where we find rest and it also energizes us. Worship is where we seek to know the presence of God's spirit in our midst. Through words, music, silence and the company of the congregation, we create sacred space in our sanctuary, or wherever we worship. At our monthly Communion service, worshippers are invited to Christ's table with the Words, "Come share the gifts of life."
We gather for worship every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary from September to June. Children are encouraged to attend and there is a children's sermon for them every week, after which they leave to attend Church School. Childcare is provided, free of charge, for infants and toddlers. During the summer months we gather in the Parish Living room at 9:30 a.m. for informal lay-led worship, which follows a continental breakfast in Fellowship Hall.
Special worship services are held throughout the year. In Advent the music ministry presents a Cantata, followed by the Christmas luncheon, and Christmas Eve is celebrated with two services: a family service with Christmas Pageant and a Candlelight Service of Lessons and Carols. We begin Lent with an Ash Wednesday Service, and a more somber Lenten cantata is performed one Sunday in worship. Maundy Thursday is observed with an Agape meal, Holy Communion and Tenebrae Service. Good Friday Prayer Vigil is held in the chancel from noon to three. Other special worship services are scheduled throughout the year. For times and events, please consult our calendar page.
From the Board of Deacons
It is always the privilege of the Board of Deacons to assist our Pastor during the celebration of Sacraments. During Holy Communion, deacons help with the distribution of the elements to all who respond to the invitation to partake. Sometimes, members of our church community cannot attend a worship service when that invitation is extended. When members who cannot and live in the Newton area wish to receive Communion in their homes, the deacons are happy to pay them a visit and provide Communion with their approval. If you or anyone you know in our community would like to receive such a visit, please phone the Second Church office (617-244-2690) and let the need be known.
